Expert Tips: How to Choose the Most Suitable Heat Pump for Your Home
Heat pumps have quickly become a popular alternative to gas boilers due to their low carbon emissions and high heating efficiency. While public interest in heat pumps continues to rise, selecting the right one for your home is no easy task. The best solution typically depends on the property's conditions, heating requirements, and the level of renovation you're willing to undertake upfront.
What is a heat pump? How does it work?
Simply put, a heat pump is an electric heating system whose core principle is to transfer heat rather than generate it.
It can extract low-grade heat from outdoor air or underground, then raise its temperature to provide indoor heating and domestic hot water.
Since heat pumps transfer energy rather than burn fuel, the heat they produce exceeds the electricity they consume.
However, heat pumps operate more efficiently at low temperatures, which is why factors such as building insulation and radiator size are crucial.
What are the different types of heat pumps?
The primary choice for most homeowners is between air-source heat pumps and ground-source heat pumps.
Air-source heat pumps are currently the most common solution for households. They absorb heat from outdoor air through an outdoor unit similar in size to an air conditioner. These systems typically have lower installation costs and faster construction times, making them suitable for most residential properties as long as there is sufficient outdoor space.
Ground-source heat pumps absorb heat through underground pipes. Since the underground temperature is more stable than air temperature, they achieve higher year-round efficiency but involve more complex installation and higher costs, making them more suitable for rural homes or houses with large gardens.
For most households, air-source heat pumps are the preferred option, while ground-source heat pumps are a more specialized and customized choice.
